This is a shortened version of the full concert, recorded on Earth Day, 22nd April at The Barbican, edited for broadcast on BBC Radio 4. And there's even the opportunity to hear Zadie sing! In the latest of our collaborations with great writers, Zadie joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra for this entertaining concert. At university she worked as a jazz singer while her 2016 novel Swing Time, long listed for the Booker Prize, explores her love of music and dance. Music has always coursed through Zadie Smith’s works. Soon enough, she came to define what it was to live in Britain – and particularly London – at the turn of the new millennium. Her first work, White Teeth, completed while the author was still a student, became an instant hit when it was published in 2000. In an area where wealth and poverty are only streets apart, life is fragile and secrets are dangerous – as Natalie and Leah are about to find out.Zadie Smith is one of Britain’s most notable living novelists. Set apart from the friends and family she grew up with, Natalie finds herself asking not only who she really is, but where she belongs. The TV film tells the story of Natalie and Leah, friends who grew up together in North West London, whose lives have taken them in different directions. NW was first published in 2012 and was shortlisted for The Women’s Prize for Fiction. NW will air at 9pm on Monday 14 November on BBC Two. Nikki Amuka-Bird ( Luther, Small Island) and Phoebe Fox ( A View From The Bridge, Life In Squares) lead the cast as the outwardly successful but unfulfilled Natalie and her more grounded friend Leah. The 90-minute drama has been adapted by director Saul Dibb ( Bullet Boy) and writer Rachel Bennette ( Bel Ami) with Mammoth Screen, the makers of Poldark and Parade’s End.
